/ Rainforest Camping tour
Sinharaja, a tropical evergreen rainforest, simply is a beautiful piece of nature, appeared untouched by humans that functions as the lungs that keep the longevity of life on earth. This popular tourist destination has been designated as a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and recognized as a world heritage in 1988. Visiting and enjoying a rainforest is an art. Because the way a rainforest functions is an art itself. Sinharaja boasts a complex and diverse ecosystem that consists of five canopy levels. Each layer of the forest is a different kingdom in its own right. Hiking through the lusty forest, following the natural trails, would lead you to spectacular terrains, mammoth woody trees and water streams where you can witness the process of ecological evolution.
Apart from having prepared well and being attentive, taking time is the other key to enjoy the adventure, thrill, joy, freedom, and magic of Sinharaja. Ceylon Rustic Guide has specially designed this 2 day camping tour to cater all of those aspects to make sure that you get the most out of this journey.
Experience early morning in the rainforest and listen to the chorus of sounds in the waking wilderness of Sinharaja – the only place in the world to spot certain species of birds. Search for one of the smallest orchids on Earth and endemic species of mammals and butterflies as well as a variety of rare insects, reptiles and amphibians. Sinharaja is known as ‘the lungs of the island’ due to its recycling policy and our love for nature – even if we are far away from the rainforest, we benefit from it every day.
This is a full-day tour that starts and ends in Colombo, and is suitable for nature lovers of all ages.

Trip Itinerary
DAY 1At 88.64km², Sinharaja is one of the world’s biggest wildlife areas. The island’s last remaining virgin rainforest is elevated 150–1150m above sea level and covers three administrative areas. Take an early morning transfer from Colombo to the cloud forest campsite, which is designed to maximize your experience of the rainforest. Enjoy trekking, birding, wildlife spotting and learning about the indigenous culture, or take a more relaxed pace and enjoy the jungle atmosphere at your leisure.
Take an overnight wildlife tour around the campsite and try to find nocturnal species such as civets, palm cats, wild pig (sus scrofa), sambur deer (rusa unicolor), mouse deer (moschiola memeinna) and baking deer (muntiacus muniak).
DAY 2After breakfast, walk to the southern banks of the Kalu river and view the giant squirrels and mouse deer. You are sure to see purple-faced leaf monkeys – perhaps the most observable of mammals – in groups of 10 to 14 high up in the canopy.
In total, 45 species of reptile have been recorded in this area – 21 of them endemic. This includes snakes, lizards, tortoises and skunks. Two very rare species of snake have been spotted – deraniyagala’s shield tail (rhinophis tricloratus) and the black spine snake (haploceros ceylonensis) – and the green pit viper, hump nosed viper and Sri Lankan krait represent the most venomous.
In the evening, explore the village’s indigenous culture and, on the way back, try to spot toque monkeys (macaca sinica) – they are rarely seen inside the rainforest, but can be found in the buffer zone villages. Enjoy the roar of the Kalu river passing through a narrow passage as you return to the campsite for dinner.
DAY 3Start the day with an early morning bird-watching walk, where you can see a variety of species in this wildlife haven – the island’s leader in birding opportunities. Trek through a rainforest that has more than 186 species of bird in total – approximately 25 are endemic out of a possible 27 in the whole of Sri Lanka.
Return to Colombo in the evening.
